HISTORY AND THE ORGANIZATION OF THE INSTITUTION

The School of Foreign Languages is one of the oldest units of Istanbul University. The Department, which was established under the name of "School of Foreign Languages" in 1933 under the roof of the Faculty of Literature, had worked as a unit affiliated to the Rectorate since 1961 and was renamed the "Department of Foreign Languages" in 1983. The Department, which has been providing foreign language education to students studying at various faculties, colleges, and institutes of Istanbul University in its own building in Süleymaniye since 1975, consists of three units, namely German, French and English. Foreign Languages Department was restructured into the School of Foreign Languages as of November 1, 2016.


Mission

To teach German, French and English languages to Turkish and foreign students who come to complete their higher education at Istanbul University by enriching them with cultural and linguistic elements; to enable students to use these languages comfortably in education and business in the future.

Vision

To follow the developments in the world in the field of foreign language teaching and to teach these languages and cultures with the most modern methods, being the first department that comes to mind in the preparation of university students for undergraduate programs and in foreign language teaching. To spread and develop the awareness within the body of Istanbul University that our department is gaining more importance day by day, without forgetting that we live in a world where the limits of information have been removed because of developments in communication and information technologies.
