Foreign language classes in German, French and English are offered by the School of Foreign Languages for those students who are accepted to the programs of Istanbul University that do not require a Preparatory Language Programme.

All these students are obligated to take a proficiency exam at the begininning of the semester which is determined by the Rectorate. The students who are successful in this exam are exempt from foreign language courses. However, the ones who are not successful have to attend compulsory foreign language courses via online education platform (/tr/content/e-ogren/e-ogren) during two semesters which are created by the collabration of The School of Foreign Languages.

All the students who first enrol in the programs without foreign language preparatory education are offered the proficiency test in German, French and English test on a date determined by the Rectorate at the beginning of the academic year. The students who are successful in this exam, are exempt from foreign language courses. In addition, students who have obtained the scores determined by the Senate in the exams whose equivalence is approved by the YÖK, and students who have previously passed the said courses in another higher education institution are exempt from foreign language courses. Those who are not successful and those who do not take the exam have to attend foreign language course. Compulsory foreign language courses are two hours a week which is in accordance with the academic calendar of the university. Students who are placed in our university through İÜYÖS Exam (Examination for Foreign or Overseas Students) and other procedures are exempt from foreign language courses. IU Higher Education Certificate (Diploma Program) and Undergraduate Education regulations are administered for assessment and evaluation in compulsory foreign language courses.
